FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Colorful Book Spines

WHEN AND WHERE DO YOU MEET?

We meet on Friday mornings for 24 weeks each school year (three trimesters of 8 weeks), usually beginning in mid September and ending in mid May at a church in McMurray, Pennsylvania.

Our day runs from 9:00 am - 12:30 pm with the option to bring a lunch to eat on the lawn afterwards.

WHAT GRADES DO YOU ACCOMMODATE?

Classes are typically broken down in the following groups:

  • Nursery

  • Preschool

  • PreK/Kindergarten

  • 1st-2nd grade

  • 3rd-5th grade

  • 6th-8th grade

  • 9th-12th grade

We have strong upper level programs that offer IEW writing and literature programs and Apologia sciences.

HOW MUCH IS TUITION?

$100 per family, per trimester. Some classes have additional fees.

WHAT SIZE IS YOUR CO-OP?

We currently have more than 40 families participating and over 120 children from nursery to 12th grade. There are over 50 students enrolled in grades 6-12th.

WHAT IS MY JOB AS A SHHC MEMBER?

SHHC is a cooperative effort. An adult member from each family is required to volunteer each week. Two hours of service are required for all members with one free hour each week. This may include being a lead teacher, substitute, aide, or helper. The adult member must remain on the property at all times.

Note: New parents do not have to teach the FIRST TRIMESTER of their FIRST YEAR at co-op and will primarily be used in preschool or kindergarten rooms the rest of the year. This policy allows new families to ease into the co-op environment without feeling overwhelmed with the responsibilities of lead teaching.

CAN I DROP MY CHILD OFF?

No. Our co-op is a true partnership of parents offering their time and talents in exchange for the time and talents of others. Therefore, every student must have a "working" parent/guardian on site at all times.

DOES SHHC OFFER OTHER ACTIVITIES OUTSIDE OF REGULAR CO-OP HOURS?

Yes, we offer a variety of member-led activities outside of regular co-op days. Some of these include, but are not limited to field trips, float trips, poetry readings, art and talent showcase, jr. high/high school activities, Mom’s Night Out, kindergarten graduation, etc. The scheduling of outside activities each year is dependent on volunteers willing to lead and coordinate the events.

HOW DO I JOIN SHHC?

All serious inquiries start on a waiting list. We bring families in based on our teacher needs and then space available for students. Please see our Admissions page.
